My Thoughts

Tracy Campbell works as hard as her Uncle Bud on the family cranberry farm.  Bu things are not looking very good for the farm financially.  She must do something to keep the farm out of the red even though she already has two jobs, one as an accountant and the other volunteering for a charity, Helping Hands.  

As she is out running errands she is literally knock off her bicycle by a complete stranger.  Even though he was polite and apologized she brushed him off and went about her way, she needed to get back to the farm and doctor her bruises.

Michael Hunter has taken some time off work to clear his head so he decides to visit Hope Harbor.  When he arrives it is not what he expected.  He is greeted by one disaster after another.  Which includes no place available to book a room and  he knocked a young woman off of her bicycle.  As he ponders who this woman is so he can make amends for the accident another woman interrupts his pondering.  She introduces herself as Anna and after a short conversation and seeing the predicament the young man is in she informs him she has an apartment for rent on weekly basis.  At least now he has a place to stay.

Tracy, Michael and Anna had something in common they each lost their spouses to death.    Anna has become a recluse and is estranged from her adult son.  They all have secrets and the pain and lack of forgiveness   was causing problems in moving on with their lives.  Blaming God seemed to their biggest problem.  

This trio seemed to work well together supporting each other in their journey to forgiveness, God, life and love. For some there was reconciliation and for others there was romance.  They heard God and knew he had a plan.

There are many characters in this book that had a hand in God's plans for this trio.  I call them Disciples in Christ. 

I had a hard time putting this book down and when I finished the book I sorry it ended.

I highly recommend this book.

Q. Tell us a bit about the story behind your latest novel. Where did your inspiration spark from?

A. I was sitting in an airport in 2003 after my first non-fiction book, Every Woman’s Battle, had released.  I opened an email oozing with kind words of affirmation for the book, and posing the question, “When will you write fiction?”  I’d just finished Francine Rivers’ Redeeming Love and had been overwhelmingly inspired by the power of a well-crafted story.  I thought, Wow – releasing an entire series of fiction works that inspire women to let go of their past sexual and emotional baggage -- that’d be SO fun and fruitful!

Q. What’s your next book or project ?

A. I have my 20th non-fiction book releasing through Thomas Nelson in January 2014, called The Passion Principles: Celebrating Sexual Freedom in Marriage.  Then Kathy Mackel and I have a follow-up novel called Veil of Secrets which will release in July 2014, focusing this time on the rocky sexual relationship between Will and Melanie Connors, who just happen to be the parents of Destiny Connors (from To Know You).

Q. What’s your favorite character you've written so far?

A. I loved Destiny in my first novel, To Know You.  She has this hard edge and doesn't leave people wondering how she really feels about anything.  She just puts in out there without blinking, without mincing words, without apology.  I was always told that I don’t have an “edit button,” so I felt a real connection to Destiny whenever she’d pop off about something.  Plus she has tattoos and rides a motorcycle – two things I've never had the hootzpah to do.

My Thoughts

Julia and Matt Whittaker would do anything to help their son, Dillon.  All attempts have failed to find a liver donor.  If only Julia had the courage to ask strangers, the two daughters whom lived with their fathers.  Could one of them make a sacrifice and become a liver donor for Dillon.  

I lost my grandson before he turned two years old.  He became a donor. How helpless you feel when you are faced with so many decision and sometimes nothing left to done.  To make the decision to be a donor is an ultimate sacrifice for those giving and the ultimate gift to those receiving.

I was hesitant to read the book because of my lose.  The pain of loosing a child never really goes away you hang on to the fact that God granted you the gift of having that person in your life as long of God chose for them to be with us. 

This book has heartache, hope, faith, forgiveness and redemption.  It will help one see how God can give us healing through our pain. 

What would you do if you were asked to be a living donor?

I recommend this book.

My Thoughts

A ex-slave Bodine Peace was given his freedom by his owner along with a large parcel of land to farm.  He did not flaunt his freedom in fact after his farm became profitable he would go to the slave sales and purchase  slaves in order to turn around and give them their freedom.  Some moved on but some stayed to become share cropper on Bo's land.  They had become a respected community of freed slaves.

Ruth was being put on the slave auction block stripped down for all to see.  When a buyer decided to check out the merchandise Ruth was told to open her mouth so the buyer could examine her teeth.  She boldly refused to open her mouth and the more they tried to physically force open her mouth she fought that much harder then bit down on the auctioneer's hand. This gained her a hit up side her head and a promise to be hauled off to be punished with a whip. No one would even consider bidding on her after the way she just acted.   At this time Bodine Peace raised his voice and said he would buy her and he did buy for a very high price.  He could have bought several slaves there freedom for what he ended up paying for her.  But he could not bear to see this beautiful creature of God being abused anymore than she already had been.

When he gets back to his farm he has Naomi clean her up and care for her injuries.  He could not believe the feeling he was having for this woman.  His wife died several years ago during childbirth and Naomi was his wife's mother.  She was like his own mother.  He speaks with Naomi and tells her to find another woman Ruth can stay with because it would not be respectable for her to stay in his house.

As Ruth healed physically it was apparent she was not healing mentally or spiritually no matter how kind Naomi and Bo were to her and her needs.  As hard as they tried to convince her she would have a good home staying with a freed slave by the name of Mae, but Ruth would become fearful and beg to stay in Bo's house because it felt like it was her home.  Ruth thought that Bo was the most kind-hearted and generous man she had ever met.After many talks with Naomi, Ruth revealed bits and pieces about her life.   She was what they called a Breeder, a female slave which main purpose was to produce children and she had been abused beyond imagination since she was twelve years old.  

Bo tried to keep the woman out of his head but the temptation of this beautiful woman living in the same house to him was unbearable for his soul.  Why had God brought this woman into his life?  Could she be the answer to his loneliness?  Is it God's will to take her as his wife?  She admits to not wanting to know his God because of the life she was forced to live without help from his God.  Can God break through her pride and hardened heart and reveal to her the love He has for her.  She can't see how God will ever free the slaves from their bondage, but Bo has great faith in the Lord our God that He will one day free His children from slavery because he had sent His Son to free mankind from sin.  

The story is told from the view of freed slave and many that were not free.  It shows how strong their faith and belief was in God and His will.  They faith that He would give them freedom as He did for the Hebrews who were finally freed.

The author included the historical figure and event of Nat Turner and the Rebellion in Tidewater, Virginia.  An uprising of slaves against the white plantation owners which killed many on both sides.  The story gave me another look and lesson into history that I will gladly pass on to my children and grandchildren.  

I highly recommend this book.

My Thoughts:

Catherine McKenna is all excited about her party.  She is turning eighteen years old and her father has arranged a party for the special occasion.  When she heads downstairs she hears raised voices. As she nears the source, it is apparent her father and Aunt are arguing about something her Aunt felt her father should tell Catherine.  She surprised both of them by asking her father what was it that he needed to tell her.  He looked very upset and he was pale.  He apologized and told her there was something he had been keeping from her but had planned telling her when she was older.  That something was, that when she was born she was a triplet and had two other sisters at which time her mother died giving birth.   Her father walked out of the not able to say more.  From this she assumed her sisters had died at birth along with her mother.  When she discovered her sisters were alive and had been adopted by two different families. She schemed to sneak away to find them taking her maid and only leaving a note for her father.   She had little information to go on but she was a spoiled headstrong girl not aware of the danger she might confront.

Collin Elliot has recovered from an injury he acquired when he was Captain of a McKenna ship.  He felt like a  failure because the ship sank but was able to save the crew.  Angus McKenna had offered Collin a job to find his daughter and protect her at any cost.  Just what Collin wanted to do was track down the spoiled Ice Princess.

Sure enough when he found her she was being accosted by a drunk.  He intervened for her until the drunk called her Mary Murray, which was her sister's name.  Could this drunk really know her sister?  Collin kept trying to keep the drunk away from her and when she realizes that Collin is her father's employee she agreed to let him continue on with them to find her sisters.  Was she close to finding Mary?  Even though she thinks Collin is handsome he may become a problem in her quest to find her sisters.

Lena Nelson Dooley writes of the third McKenna daughter and the search to put all three girls together again.  It was funny, heartbreaking, mysterious, adventurous and romantic.  It was the whole package an amazing series wrapped up in a big bow.  Angus McKenna  finally forgives himself by the grace of God and prays to be reconnected with all three of his daughters.  Could Angus possibly wish for more?  Leave it up to this author to give more!

I highly recommend this book.

About Beth

Childhood memories of her grandfather's ranch came alive as Beth wrote her first Amish story. Her parents grew up in the country, so she appreciates pastoral life and respects those who make a living off the land. She visits a nearby Amish community just south of Fort-Worth for an occasional church service or brunch with the bishop and his wife. And on the way home she stops at the community store to get some plum jam!

 Beth received a degree in social work and psychology from the University of Nebraska. She worked as a caseworker for Boulder County Department of Social Services before starting a family. Beth and her husband, two children, along with two cats, a beagle, and a fish named Fish live in Texas after moving from their first home in Colorado. My Thoughts 

Annie Beiler is the daughter that most Amish girls strive to model after and mother's trusted with their children. She is the oldest daughter in her family and her parents know she is a dedicated, respectful and dependable daughter. It has also been taken for granted within the community that she will marry the young man next door whom she has been best friends with since childhood.

All of this fell into jeopardy when she finds evidence that she had not only been adopted by her Amish parents but that she had been abandoned as a newborn in a corn field at night and left to the bitter elements of nature and would have died if her adopted father had not heard her weak cry and rescued her from death.

She feels disconnected  from her present life and is adamant she search for her birth mother and find out the circumstances of her being abandoned.  Her parents and the Reverend of the community do not and will not approve for her to leave her community.  They believe God expects her to accept the life God has blessed her with.

This is a heartbreaking story! Keep the tissue box handy.

The author did such a great job writing about such a sensitive subject. Just when you think you know what Julie should do the author has such a better scenario for each and every predicament.  You've heard of Father Know Best.  Well this was Author Know Best.  That what makes me the review and her the author.

Julie's adopted parents should have held onto this verse. Proverbs 22:6 "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."

I highly recommend this book.
