Betting on Hope, Four of Hearts Ranch #1 by Debra Clopton

About Book

A bet gone wrong. A small town's meddling. And a cowboy intent on saving his ranch.Maggie Hope is an advice columnist whose background leaves her with little advice to give . . . and it’s beginning to show. When Maggie fills in at an interview with champion horse trainer Tru Monahan, the on-camera chemistry between them is undeniable. Maggie’s bosses know this is the opportunity she's been looking for to launch her career—and their bank accounts. In order to save her column, Maggie takes Tru up on the bet that he can teach her to ride a quick-stepping cutting horse like any cowgirl, despite the fact that she has never been on a horse. And in the meantime, she can get the scoop on the man under the cowboy hat.

Tru has been on the competition circuit for longer than he’d like, but he knows it's the only way he can afford to keep the Four of Hearts Ranch that means so much to his ailing grandfather. So when his sponsors see the opportunity for Tru’s fans to get to know the star on a more intimate level, he knows he must oblige. To his dismay, Maggie not only invades his small town of Wishing Springs, but she also invades his heart, and that is something he cannot let any woman do—for her own good.

In Wishing Springs, Maggie finds what she has always been looking for: a community and a home. But when her past catches up to her, it threatens everything, even the tender hope that this town holds all of her heart’s desires.

My Thoughts

After watching the news last night I decided to start reading BETTING ON HOPE intending to read just a little while. I was still reading when the sun came up. The words were blurry and I couldn't keep my eyes open which really upset me because I had gotten 91% of the book read. Hate it when that happens!

Finished reading it this morning.

Tru Monahan is not only a true cowboy he is truly a gentleman. He had so much patience with Maggie and her insecurities.  She had every right to not trust men. But Tru Monohan was a different breed than the men she had known in her past.

She made a bet with Tru and he was determined to win that bet.

Tru has a loving close knit family, where as Maggie's family is sadly the opposite.

If you are wondering, yes, it is an amazing read! I highly recommend this book And I am ready for book two in this series.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.

My Thoughts

Four Stories and Four Authors!

First Story "Spitfire Sweetheart" is just what the title says.  Maizy a spitfire tomboy that is her neighbor's burr under his saddle.  Rylan tries hard to keep his distance from her for fear of letting her take up a big space in his heart.  But due to her causing him to be injured she is forced to care for him and his ranch while she is also forced by her father to dress and act like a lady while doing so.  This shoots down any chance of him protecting his heart from her

Mary Connealy writes a fun story with characters I'd love to spend more time with.  I love a story with a head strong woman determined to be herself.  Our Father in Heaven has a plan for us and we should not fight against Him and let His will be done.

Second Story "Love Letter to the Editor".  A woman that is determined to stand on her own cognizance.  She is hoping to become an Editor or Managing Editor.  But to her great surprise her father has hired someone else to be editor of the paper.  Jack Lugrove feels bad in that he was not welcome as editor by Molly yet he will not be detoured from doing his job.  Molly wants to prove herself to her father and  at the same time find some way of ridding the paper and  herself of Jack.

Robin Lee Hatcher has given Molly fortitude  that could be her downfall..  Truth is God and the truth will prevail.  There is romance, intrigue and especially faith and hope in God.  People sometimes take a path they are uncomfortable with not realizing it is God leading us.  Molly was in danger of letting her pride get the best of her.  Great lesson to be learned from this story.

Third Story "A Cowboy for Katie"  Recently Katie's life has been horrific.  She is left alone to rebuild her ranch and her life.  The problem is she refuses the advances of any man fearing all they want is her land.  She is determined to rebuild on her own.  She relents and hires a wandering cowboy. She learns he is the perfect man for the getting the work done without moving into her fragile personal space.  Will Treb realizes there is more to be rebuilt than just the ranch house and barn.  He notices Katie is damaged emotionally which causes her to have night terror along with mistrust of anyone, including him.

Debra Clopton writes a heart-wrenching story about a young woman barely holding on to reality.  the author reveals how God will provide if we ask and believe he will answer, which happened in the form of Will Treb. I fell in love with the sweet patient character of Will Treb.  Be sure you have a box of tissues on hand it is a tear jerk-er.

Fourth Story "Courting Trouble".   This is the perfect title for this story.  Grace Davenport just can't seem to get a break in life.  Grace's young son attempts to hire Brock Daniels, a local attorney that does not really want the job.  But the young boy touched Brock's heart and after he does some investigating on the woman and her charge of murdering her husband he decided he would take the case.

I asked myself, "Could this woman really be guilty or is she being railroaded by some evil force?". In this story Margaret Brownley created the wonderful character, Brock Daniels in that he was so determined and lead by God to help this broken family.  I loved the sweet well mannered young boy he  will pull at your heart strings as he did mine.  It is never too late when lives have been broken for so long to be lifted up and healed of by God.  This story was mysterious, with a growing romance and healing grace.

I highly recommend this collection of four books in one.

I rated this book 5 out of 5

My Thoughts

Charlotte Fraser returns  home to Fairhaven determined to bring the plantation back to life. She was taught well by her father as to the running of a plantation and growing rice.  There were many obstacles in her way.  She listened to the advice of other plantation owners who were loyal friends of her father's. The widower neighbor Nicholas Bentancourt was the new heir of Willowood Plantation had become intrigued with her fortitude and courage.  She even agreed to tutor the widower's two young daughters to help support her plantation and put food on her table.

Nicholas leaves on a business trip and is feared sick or possibly dead leaving the girls in Charlotte's care. What is she to do?  If he does not return, the girls will be left orphans.  She decides she must go in search of Nicholas for the girls sake, of course.  Could she be falling in love with Nicholas?

It was sad to read about the death and destruction caused by the Civil War leaving people to start almost from scratch to feed and house their families.  Many did not succeed and had to give up the life they lived before the war.  The author drew me into the story with Charlotte's determination to keep a promise to made to her father.  She pulled facts from historical events to write this novel giving us a glimpse into the rebuilding of South.  My heart ached for the loss of lives and livelihood.  This was an amazing and realistic read!

I highly recommend this book.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.

TO KNOW YOU ~ Win a Personal Coaching Session with Shannon Ethridge and $100 to Lisa Leonard Designs!

About the book:

Julia Whittaker's rocky past yielded two daughters, both given up for adoption as infants. Now she must find them to try to save her son.

Julia and Matt Whittaker's son has beaten the odds for thirteen years only to have the odds---and his liver---crash precipitously. The only hope for his survival is a "living liver" transplant, but the transplant list is long and Dillon's time is short. His two older half-sisters, born eighteen months apart to two different fathers, offer his only hope for survival.

But can Julia ask a young woman---someone she surrendered to strangers long ago and has never spoken with---to make such a sacrifice to save a brother she's never known? Can she muster the courage to journey back into a shame-filled season of her life, face her choices and their consequences, and find any hope of healing?

And what if she discovers in her own daughters' lives that a history of foolish choices threatens to repeat itself? Julia knows she's probably embarking on a fool's errand---searching for the daughters she abandoned only now that she needs something from them. But love compels Julia to take this journey. Can grace and forgiveness compel her daughters to join her?

how the past creates the present . . . and how even the most
shattered lives can be redeemed.

Q&A with Shannon about her new book --

Enjoy learning a little bit more about the story behind the story of Shannon Ethridge's new novel To Know You. And don't forget to RSVP to Shannon's Facebook party on 11/19 and enter to win $100 to Lisa Leonard Design and a personal coaching session!

Q. Tell us a bit about the story behind your latest novel. Where did your inspiration spark from?

A. I was sitting in an airport in 2003 after my first non-fiction book, Every Woman’s Battle, had released.  I opened an email oozing with kind words of affirmation for the book, and posing the question, “When will you write fiction?”  I’d just finished Francine Rivers’ Redeeming Love and had been overwhelmingly inspired by the power of a well-crafted story.  I thought, Wow – releasing an entire series of fiction works that inspire women to let go of their past sexual and emotional baggage -- that’d be SO fun and fruitful!

Q. What’s your next book or project ?

A. I have my 20th non-fiction book releasing through Thomas Nelson in January 2014, called The Passion Principles: Celebrating Sexual Freedom in Marriage.  Then Kathy Mackel and I have a follow-up novel called Veil of Secrets which will release in July 2014, focusing this time on the rocky sexual relationship between Will and Melanie Connors, who just happen to be the parents of Destiny Connors (from To Know You).

Q. What’s your favorite character you've written so far?

A. I loved Destiny in my first novel, To Know You.  She has this hard edge and doesn't leave people wondering how she really feels about anything.  She just puts in out there without blinking, without mincing words, without apology.  I was always told that I don’t have an “edit button,” so I felt a real connection to Destiny whenever she’d pop off about something.  Plus she has tattoos and rides a motorcycle – two things I've never had the hootzpah to do.

Shannon Ethridge is celebrating the release of  To Know You (co-written by Kathryn Mackel), by giving away a $100 gift certificate to Lisa Leonard Designs and a personal coaching session, as well as throwing a Facebook Author Chat Party!

My Thoughts

Julia and Matt Whittaker would do anything to help their son, Dillon.  All attempts have failed to find a liver donor.  If only Julia had the courage to ask strangers, the two daughters whom lived with their fathers.  Could one of them make a sacrifice and become a liver donor for Dillon.

I lost my grandson before he turned two years old.  He became a donor. How helpless you feel when you are faced with so many decision and sometimes nothing left to done.  To make the decision to be a donor is an ultimate sacrifice for those giving and the ultimate gift to those receiving.

I was hesitant to read the book because of my lose.  The pain of loosing a child never really goes away you hang on to the fact that God granted you the gift of having that person in your life as long of God chose for them to be with us.

This book has heartache, hope, faith, forgiveness and redemption.  It will help one see how God can give us healing through our pain.

What would you do if you were asked to be a living donor?

I recommend this book.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.

My Thoughts

Amy Lange has so many wonderful memories of her and her brother, Ben at Rosemary
Cottage and their long hours playing on the beach.  But this year Ben isn't with her at Rosemary Cottage but his memory is here.  Ben lost his life in a surfing accident.  Amy was looking for closure in her brother's death.   She may even move her midwife practice to Hope Island.

Amy can't help but wonder if his death was really caused by an accident.

Curtis Ireland has also lost a sibling, his sister, Gina was was killed in a boating accident. She left something very valuable to Curtis's care, Raine, Gina's daughter.  Curtis will do anything to protect his niece from intruders.  That is until he meets Amy Lange and then his world is turned upside down.  But is that a good thing  or a bad thing?

This is a nail biting, chills running up your spine, suspenseful story.  Your brain will be working overtime to find the secrets that will solve THE mystery.  Aside from all the suspense is an on and off romance between Amy and Ben, with littIe Raine in the middle.

I get really into the books I'm reading and forget sometimes that the characters can't hear me giving them some well needed advice.

This author never seems to let me down when I read one of her books and I have read several of them.  All winners, in my opinion.

I highly recommend not only this book but this series and especially this author.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.

A BRIDE FOR ALL SEASONS by MARGARET BROWNLEY, ROBIN LEE HATCHER, MARY CONNEALY, DEBRA CLOPTON ~ A LITFUSE TOUR

More about A Bride For All Seasons:
It All Started with an Ad in a Mail Order Bride Catalogue . . .

Melvin Hitchcock of the Hitching Post Mail Order Bride Catalog isn't dishonest---not exactly. If he tweaks his clients' applications a bit, it's because he's looking out for their best interests.
This charming bouquet of novellas introduces four Hitching Post prospects in the year 1870, each one eager for second chances . . . and hungry for happiness. Year in, year out, they'll learn that love often comes in unexpected packages.
And Then Came Spring by Margaret Brownley
Mary-Jo has been unlucky all her life. But who would guess she'd travel halfway across the country to meet her match . . . only to find him dead!
An Ever-After Summer by Debra Clopton
Ellie had no idea she's not what Matthew ordered. And what's wrong with being a "Bible thumper" anyway? She's determined to show him she's tougher than she looks---and just the girl he needs.
Autumn's Angel by Robin Lee Hatcher
Luvena would be perfect for Clay if she didn't come with kids. But kids are a deal breaker, especially in a rough-and-trouble mining town. The trouble is, there's no money to send them back. . .
Winter Wedding Bells by Mary Connealy
David's convinced he's not long for the world. He needs someone to mother his boys when he's gone---nothing more. Can plucky Irish Megan convince him to work at living instead of dying?

My Thoughts

Four award winning authors, four books in one about four mail order brides. Now this makes for an interesting read.  The man that operates the mail order bride catalogue appointed himself not just as a go between but as a matchmaker of his own making, editing letters without the senders consent. Some of the women have traveled a long distance to meet their intended only to find there was a lack of communication between the two.  How could so many important details be missing?  It was very apparent they all had been deceived. Most of the women had no money to return to their previous life or other circumstances which prevented them from returning.

Each story is unique in it's own special way. My heart ached for each family. The couples had faith in God that they were together for a purpose.  Many of their personal problems gave them strength to carry on with the arrangement in hope for a better future, even though some were a little more skeptical than others.

I highly recommend this book.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.
