The Calling, Inn at Eagle Hill series, book 2 by Suzanne Woods Fisher - Litfuse Publicity Group Tour

About the book:

Book Two in the Inn at Eagle Hill series.

Bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher delivers her trademark twists, turns, and tender romance in this delightful and exciting visit to the deceptively quiet community of Stoney Ridge.

Twenty-year-old Bethany Schrock is restless. Her love life has derailed, her faith hangs by a thread, and she is spending the incredibly hot summer days wading through a lifetime's accumulation of junk at the home of five ancient Amish sisters. About the only thing that holds her interest is the spirited and dangerously handsome Jimmy Fisher---and he seems bent on irritating her to no end.

When the sly old sisters and a guest at the Inn get Bethany involved in running the local soup kitchen and starting a community garden, she suddenly finds herself wondering, Shootfire! How did that happen? Despite her newfound purposefulness, a gnawing emptiness about a childhood mystery continues to plague her. Encouraged by Jimmy Fisher, she will seek out the answers she craves---and uncover a shocking secret that will break her heart, heal it, and point her to love.

My Thoughts

Bethany Shrock still suffers from the betrayal of a man she thought was meant to become her intended.  So she keeps herself busy helping at home which is also the Inn at Eagle Hill.  Her family is trying to put their lives back together after the unexpected death of her father and the disappearance of her brother.

Bethany is been offered a job which becomes a task much bigger than she could ever have imaged. She has agreed to clear the clutter from the  home of the elderly Amish Sisters so they can take their turn in having church in their home. But that many take a very long time.

Jimmy Fisher has been coming around to visit Bethany trying to draw her into conversation.  She has no use for any man. The last man in her life broke her heart.  Besides she has always found Jimmy very annoying even if he was handsome.  She had other things to do like help with the guest at the Inn and helping the elder sisters with all of their projects which includes a soup kitchen.

I have been anxious to read book two of this series. You see, I became very attached to this family and their community.  The author's Shrock family characters, were held together by together by four determined women, each withholding secrets. This made for a suspenseful story and more than one blooming romance.

God must have been guiding the author's heart as she wrote this book. I actually read this book in one day. Now I am ready to read her next book.

I highly recommend this book.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.

My Thoughts

I am so glad I decided to read this prequel before reading "What Once Was Lost".  I would have missed some sweet, tender and heartbreaking moments in Alice Denton's and her two small children's life prior to "What Once Was Lost".

Alice's young daughter had such an unwavering faith in God and in her mother.  Which in turn gave Alice the strength she needed to carry on with her life whatever path God chose for them.

The author has wrapped up "WHAT ONCE WAS LOST" with the prequel, the novel and a short story extra.  It's like a beautifully gift wrapped package just waiting to be enjoyed.

Reading this prequel is an option.  "What One Was Lost" is a stand alone read and "Just As I Am"  is extra.  But I highly recommend reading all three.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.

 About Mercy River

With 13 children between them, it’s amazing that Whitney Permann, Brooke Stone, and Soni Muller have time for anything other than runny noses, sock hunts, and prying suckers off the van floor. But music has been a part of each of their lives since childhood, and is now a strong presence in their homes.

The three friends met while singing in the Jenny Phillips Choir and there found a common love for tight harmonies and sharing the gospel through song. Over the past five years, Mercy River has traveled all over the United States and Canada as a highly sought after ensemble, performing for thousands of people while testifying of the Savior. Each member of the group brings several years of experience performing, writing, and directing hundreds of firesides and concerts—as well as recording on dozens of inspirational albums.

Their self-titled debut album was released in May 2008. “Beautiful Dawn,” was released in March of 2010. Their third album, “Higher” was released with rave reviews in February 2012. Mercy River is back with mesmerizing harmonies and upbeat vocal arrangements in “Come Alive”.

My Thoughts

Charlotte Fraser returns  home to Fairhaven determined to bring the plantation back to life. She was taught well by her father as to the running of a plantation and growing rice.  There were many obstacles in her way.  She listened to the advice of other plantation owners who were loyal friends of her father's. The widower neighbor Nicholas Bentancourt was the new heir of Willowood Plantation had become intrigued with her fortitude and courage.  She even agreed to tutor the widower's two young daughters to help support her plantation and put food on her table.

Nicholas leaves on a business trip and is feared sick or possibly dead leaving the girls in Charlotte's care. What is she to do?  If he does not return, the girls will be left orphans.  She decides she must go in search of Nicholas for the girls sake, of course.  Could she be falling in love with Nicholas?

It was sad to read about the death and destruction caused by the Civil War leaving people to start almost from scratch to feed and house their families.  Many did not succeed and had to give up the life they lived before the war.  The author drew me into the story with Charlotte's determination to keep a promise to made to her father.  She pulled facts from historical events to write this novel giving us a glimpse into the rebuilding of South.  My heart ached for the loss of lives and livelihood.  This was an amazing and realistic read!

I highly recommend this book.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.

About Author:

Beth started writing her first book in 2002 and a year later it was published! She received a degree in social work from the University of Nebraska and worked as a case worker before starting a family and writes in a
variety of genres in both fiction and non-fiction. Beth followed her passion and now writes full time.

 Beth's website www.bethshriverwriter.com

My Thought

Life  on a Texas horse farm is hard for Abigail Barker especially since her mothers death.  Her father's verbal and emotional abuse towards Abby gets worse as time goes by.  Her new horse has been injured adding to her father's long list of complaints.  How much more can she endure? Thanks to an Amish-man, Mose Fisher coming to her aide she would not have been able to manage.

Since walking out on the horse farm and her father she suspects he is sick and worries he will not have anyone to care for him.  She struggles with why she should care after the way he had treated her?  She prays to God for Him to guide her.

What a contrast this must have been for Abby going from feeling unloved and unappreciated to being overwhelmed with the love and protection of the Amish.  Might she be able to build a new life among the Amish and possibly with Mose Fisher?

Book three in the Touch of  Grace series is a beautiful love story.  The author created the character of Abby as being as broken in heart and soul as the new horse Abby cared for so dearly.  Then she creates the character of Mose as no doubt being sent by God to rescue Abby, bringing her closer to God and the Amish community where she was meant to be. This story has suspense, danger, romance, trials, tribulation and reconciliation. I can't wait to read more from this author.  What a loving and tender heart this author Beth Shriver must have, she is a blessing to her readers.

I highly recommend this book.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.

Disclosure:  I received a free copy of this book from Booketeria/Realms for review.  I was in no way compensated for this review.  This is review is my honest opinion.

About Author:

Beverly Lewis, born in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country, is the New York Times bestselling author of more than ninety books. Her stories have been published in eleven languages worldwide. A keen interest in her mother's Plain heritage has inspired Beverly to write many Amish-related novels, beginning with The Shunning, which has sold more than one million copies and was recently made into an Original Hallmark Channel movie. In 2007 The Brethren was honored with a Christy Award. She has been interviewed by both national and international media, including Time magazine, the Associated Press, and the BBC. Beverly lives with her husband, David, in Colorado.

Visit her Web site at www.beverlylewis.com for more information.

Bethany House Publishers Q & A with Beverly:

1. You are a regular on multiple bestseller lists, including the New York Times, and your books have been published in eleven languages—and counting. What do you think of your widespread popularity? Wowed—and humbled! I never imagined such a writing journey—or a reception from readers—after my first Amish novel, The Shunning, was released in 1997. Sharing God’s tremendous love through story is an opportunity I don’t take lightly, and I am so thankful for His hand of blessing on my work. My Plain relatives and friends have been surprised and pleased by the apparent desire for a less hectic way of life—and appreciation for the Amish—many of my readers have voiced over the years.

2. Does Home to Hickory Hollow differ from your previous series? Yes! Home to Hickory Hollow is a collection of individual novels, unlike my prior series. While there are some repeating characters and a common setting that tie the books together, each novel is a complete story that readers can enjoy in any order they wish.

3. What inspired your newest novel, The Secret Keeper? Years ago, I received a letter from a young woman who was eager to know what it would take for her as an Englisher to become Amish. Since then, I’ve received many other such letters from people with a similar hope, or with a longing to somehow share in the Old Ways. Those letters planted the compelling seed for this story. Jenny Burns, who gives up her modern life to become a seeker with the hope of becoming an Amish church convert, certainly wouldn’t have come to life without them!

4. Tell us a little about The Secret Keeper. My main character is a twenty-five-year-old single Englisher named Jennifer Burns. Jenny shocks her family and friends when she bids farewell to her modern life in favor of the Old Order Amish world. The people of Hickory Hollow are naturally very curious about this beautiful young seeker who comes to live among them—one handsome Amishman in particular. Yet while Jenny delights in finally being able to live Plain, she faces many challenges in her Proving time. Like the other books in Home to Hickory Hollow, The Secret Keeper revisits the beloved setting of my very first Amish series, Heritage of Lancaster County. More than any other book in this series, though, The Secret Keeper offers a window into the lives of some of the most memorable characters from The Shunning and its sequels. For example, Jenny comes to live with Samuel and Rebecca Lapp, Katie’s adoptive parents, during the time of Jenny’s Proving. Rebecca is actually a viewpoint character with gripping secrets of her own, and even dear Katie makes several appearances, along with her husband, Daniel, and the rest of their darling family. The Secret Keeper definitely gives longtime fans a chance to catch up. And although this book is a wonderful read on its own, some are calling it another sequel to The Shunning!

5. The concept of the Proving is very important to this book. What exactly is a Proving time and how long does it typically last? A Proving is the process through which an Englisher can become a member of an Amish church. The specific requirements vary, but during a Proving, a person separates from the English world, wears Plain dress, and learns and adopts the Old Ways—the community’s traditional cultural practices. This includes everything from attending Preaching services to practical matters like hitching up a horse to a buggy and learning to speak Pennsylvania Dutch. Potential converts are expected to reflect Gelassenheit—a compliant and submissive spirit— in all they do. If they succeed, they are baptized into the Amish church. A Proving time can last anywhere from six months to two years—the exact length is determined by the bishop and ministerial brethren in an individual church district.

6. What are you currently working on? Well, right now I’m very busy writing The Last Bride, the fifth novel in Home to Hickory Hollow, as well as Child of Mine, a collaboration with my husband, David Lewis. The Last Bride will be released on April 1, 2014, and Child of Mine on June 3, 2014.

7. You certainly have a lot going on! How can readers keep up with your work? There are many ways to stay in the loop! To sign up for my free newsletter, readers can visit my Facebook fan page, facebook.com/officialbeverlylewis, where I answer questions related to my writing life and the Amish tradition, or my website, beverlylewis.com. The website includes my monthly blog, book excerpts, delicious authentic Amish recipes, and news about my upcoming fall book tour, which will include library and bookstore events September 4-13 all over Kentucky and Indiana. I love this opportunity to connect with my readers!

My Thoughts

Ever since Jennifer Burns was a young girl she has wanted to be Amish.  Friends and family never thought she would actually sneak away to join the Old Order Amish.  She is called a seeker in the Amish community and will have to go through a Proving time first.

While staying with an Amish couple she meets their charming bachelor neighbor and the connection between the two is instant. Andrew Lapp feared he would never meet the woman he was to build his life with until he meets Jennifer. They both were pretty sure they would no tbe allowed to seek a future together so they became friends and tried to keep any other feeling buried.

Beverly Lewis has never failed to entertain me with her writing.  This book was a perfect example of her unlimited talent.  I enjoyed revisiting characters from the previous novels and series writtten by Beverly along with being introduced to a new character from outside the Amish community, Jennifer Burns the seeker.  I am so excited to read THE LAST BRIDE book five in this series.  Beverly is on roll with this series!

I highly recommend this book.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House/Baker Publishing for review.  I was in no way compensated for this review.  This review is my honest opinion.

A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE by TRICIA GOYER

About the book:

Rose turned her back on the man she loves after he assisted the Englisch during World War II---only to discover she's an Englischer herself. Born in the midst of the hardships of The Great Depression, Rose grew up in Berlin, Ohio, in the arms of a loving Amish family. But she is overwhelmed by self-doubt when she learns that she was born Englisch and abandoned when her family moved West in search of work. Was she meant to be Amish or would she have been better off growing up with her own kind---Englischers? When the man she loves leaves her behind, Rose is certain he left for good. Yet Rose discovers sometimes our greatest gifts are the ones we fear.

About Tricia:

USA Today best-selling author Tricia Goyer is the author of over 35 books, including the three-book Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors series and "Lead Your Family Like Jesus," (co-written with Ken Blanchard). She has written over 500 articles for national publications and blogs for high traffic sites like TheBetterMom.com andMomLifeToday.com. She is the host of Living Inspired, a weekly radio show. Tricia and family live in Little Rock, Arkansas. They have six children.

You can find out more about Tricia atwww.TriciaGoyer.com.

My Thoughts:

Rose was certain that when her intended left to join the military he would not return.  She had assumed he had left not only her but the Amish community.  She just knew he had turned away from the Amish beliefs. When he did return she did not want to see him because he had done the unforgivable by choosing to live among the Englisch.

When she uncovers a secret about her past she fears her own place in the Amish community may b e under scrutiny.

The cover image drew me in and once I opened the book I did not want to put it down.  The author held my attention with the suspense and heartache of so many that surrounded Rose.  The love of her family was far stronger that she gave them credit.  Her beau loved her deeply and was so patient with her many doubts and fears of her future. Loved the book from beginning to end.

I highly recommend this book.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.
